Bitwig Studio[]
Bitwig is a relatively new DAW created by a small team of three former Ableton developers. It closely resembles Ableton, but does not have its feature depth, yet.
Notable features of Bitwig[]
- Clear and concise workflow
- Hybrid MIDI/Audio tracks
- Mix of the Ableton session view and timeline mode, complete with the ability to switch per-track what plays between session and timeline, and recordable to the timeline of course
- Flexible modulation system with visible feedback (a bit like Serum)
- Everything inside Bitwig is made with an internal modular system, which is supposed to be editable with the upcoming version 2.0
- Support for multidimensional polyphonic expression events (MPE), with the ability to record such input devices (e.g. ROLI Seabord RISE) - the internal FM-4 and PolySynth support those, too
- Bitbridge and plugin sandboxing: 32bit or 64bit does not matter to Bitwig, and if any plugin crashes the application itself isn't affected, you just have to restart the plugin (or if you don't use sandboxing, the audio engine)
- Good (but alas not perfect) latency compensation, e.g. for external devices
- Can edit multiple projects at once (but only one can have the audio engine and play at any time)
- Support for multiple monitors (up to 3), with a special view for touchscreen devices
- Available for Windows, OSX and Linux
